(Excerpt - EJ Waggoner)
God's Power in the Grass.
Look at the tiny blade of grass just pushing its way through the hard ground to the sunlight. It is a very frail thing. Pull it up, and you will see that it has not power to stand alone. Even scrape the soil away from it as it stands in the earth, and it will at once lose its upright position. It depends upon the soil to hold it up, and yet it is pushing its way to the surface through that very hard soil. Dissect it as carefully as you please, and you will find nothing to indicate the possession of power. Rub it between your fingers, and you will see that there is scarcely any substance to it. It is about as frail a thing as there is in nature, and yet it will often remove quite large stones that are in the way of its growth.
Whence comes this power? It is not inherent in the grass, but is nothing less than the power of the life of God, working according to his word, which in the beginning said, "Let the earth bring forth grass."
*******
I've been gardening for a bit now and have off and on throughout the years going way back to my dad and I tending a backyard vegetable. I've started plants as seedlings and they can be so incredibly fragile. I've planted tiny seeds only to watch them grow and become amazing plants that you'd never suspect started out from such a teeny tiny seed. The excerpt above talks about the power in the blade of grass being the supernatural power of God and it truly could be no other.
That seedling pushes up dirt, knocks pebbles out of its way, forces itself up between cement sidewalks, yet it is truth that if disturbed slightly by us it will quickly wither up and die.
Growing seedlings can be tricky especially when trying to thin them out. I've managed to sadly destroy a lot of carrot seedlings through thinning, the roots are so fragile and when they grow so close just pulling one can kill another.
How can something that has such power be so weak?
We are fragile in many ways. We have to be cautious as we try survive life. Our breath is easily suppressed even when we eat and a piece of food ends up blocking our airway. I'm not going to go into the numerous ways our lives can be accidentally and tragically ended, we all know them. We've lost a lot of loved ones through tragedies.
Truly we are given life by God and kept living by His will and His power. No, we often don't understand when the power of God allows someone to die, and many lose faith in God when a loved one dies believing God has abandoned them by hurting them so grievously. We hate the pain of such loss and rightly so. We are called to exercise our faith in a massive way, to believe that God is doing all things for our good whether we comprehend it or not. Relying upon God's power, recognizing God's power, believing God's power, we must bow down before such an awesome God - the God whose power uses a tiny seed, a fragile seedling and gives them all they need to become a mighty plant.
By the grace of God may we know His wonders, our Savior, our Lord-- may we be forever His as weak as we are, relying upon His power in all ways so that we believe all things will work together for our good because we love Him!
