Over eating.
Drunkenness.
Cares of this life.
Are any of these three things something you are familiar with?
We know factually beyond any bias, prejudice, or what have you- that over eating leads to a whole host of ailments to us physically. One common ailment is being overweight and what that does is well known. Sure you have some people who are overweight and relatively healthy being such, but long term as we age the more detrimental being overweight becomes. I'm not going to go into any technical jargon about it all, we know that over eating isn't good for many reasons.
Spiritually over eating is called gluttony and that is an abuse of food. You've heard the saying- 'A glutton for punishment', meaning someone is seeking punishment excessively. Gluttony in anything is wrong- as mentioned- it's an abuse of things and when you abuse anything it is not good.
Drunkenness- well, truly we all know why drunkenness can be very wrong. You lose the ability to think clearly, your mind is altered into a state of vulnerability beyond your ability to control. We know why drunkenness is something to be very leery of.
Cares of this life… this encompasses so much of our lives, doesn't it? You may not over eat, you may not get drunk, but are you free from cares of this life? We all have them, but to be OVERCHARGED with the cares of this life is another thing. Again, living in the times we live it's easy to believe there are few who are not overcharged with the cares of this life.
I happen to live with someone who has been the epitome of someone who has never let the cares of this life affect them very much. My husband. Maybe he cares to a degree, but he's never been one to panic in anyway, not easily. In the twenty some years I've known him, there have been only a couple of times he's worried to a bit of excess and even then it wasn't something overly remarkable. On the other hand, I've worried enough for both of us and probably many others as well, much to my shame.
We are told to take HEED to ourselves… so that we are NOT doing these things we've just talked about. Why are we told to take HEED? Because if we are so caught up in these things we will not be aware of the coming of our LORD
Luk 21:31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
Luk 21:32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
Luk 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Luk 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
Luk 21:35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
Luk 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
Let us WATCH.
Let us PRAY ALWAYS.
May we be ACCOUNTED worthy to ESCAPE.
May we STAND BEFORE THE SON OF MAN!
All by the grace of our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!
