Sin is a transgression of the law. You break the law- you sin.
1Jn_3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
You cannot commit a sin without transgressing the law, it's impossible.
Sin is pointed out by the law. You don't know you've sin except the law points it out.
Rom 7:7… I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
The commands tell us what we are to do and what we are not to do.
1. Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
We are to have NO OTHER gods before GOD.
2. Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth
Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exo 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
We are to not to bow down to, or serve anything other than God, who requires NO statue or likeness for us to bow down to.
3. Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
We are not to use God's name without reverence for the LORD our God.
4. Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
We are to remember and keep the sabbath day holy.
5. Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
We are to honor our parents.
6. Exo 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.
We are not to murder.
7. Exo 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
We are not to commit adultery.
8. Exo 20:15 Thou shalt not steal.
We are not to steal.
9. Exo 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
We are not to lie about others.
10. Exo 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
We are not to covet the things that belong to others.
There are eight commands about things we shouldn't do and two commandments for things we should do.
These ten commandments are summed up in two -
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang ALL the law and the prophets.
The first four commandments of the ten given reveal our loving God with all our heart, soul and mind.
The last six commandments of the ten given reveal our love for each other.
When we choose not to follow these commandments we sin. The law tells us what we are to do and not do and if we do not follow it- we sin. All sin mankind has ever committed and still commits are a result of breaking those commandments. Not a single sin exists that isn't a breaking of these laws of God.
Not ONE of those royal laws, the ten commandments has been disannulled so it is no longer a revealer of sin.
God did NOT say those were laws at one time but now it's okay to not keep those laws any longer. God did NOT make a mistake in those ten commandments that needed correction.
People would have you believe Jesus came and did away with those old commandments, that's not true. There were ceremonial laws that were done away with, and there were perversions man introduced to the royal laws that He corrected, but not a single law could ever be done away with because all the ten are summed up in the two -loving God and loving each other- and to do away with them would be doing away with loving God and loving each other.
We fulfill the laws' requirements-- meaning we follow, we keep the laws, the commandments, when we love God and love each other.
How could doing away with a single one of those ten commandments be possible when they reveal love? All of them reveal love.
When we sin and break one of those laws (or more), we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
There are millions and millions of ways to break the commandments. Don't kid yourself into believe just because you didn't physically break one of the laws, that it wasn't broken. Jesus gave a couple of examples of what I mean.
Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Mat 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
Mat 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Just because our outsides are sparkling clean, our hands without a stain upon them doesn't mean our insides aren't crawling with filth and our hearts bloody with sin.
The royal laws were not done away with at all by Jesus, not one, and we break them constantly.
We have to recognize our failure to uphold the law and seek forgiveness for breaking it. Our Savior died to take upon Himself the sins we've asked forgiveness for. He paid the penalty for our sins.
We were given an example of that whole process of forgiveness before Christ came into the world, the God-man, who sacrificed Himself-- the Lamb of God.
That example given prior to Christ's sacrifice was the Sanctuary and the services of the Sanctuary.
Why is it important to know about this? Because that example went clear on down to the point of sin being completely done away with forever, and OBVIOUSLY we've not reached that point in human history because we still have sin in our world.
So, it would do us well to know the example of the Sanctuary so we can know where we are in the process of sin's eradication, because it will be eradicated.
More on this later, by the will of God!
